PAT Testing

What is PAT Testing?

In order to ensure your electrical equipment is safe for continued use, Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is a major importance to everyone involved. In areas where a lot of electrical equipment is used, e.g. commercial or work premises – as part of your Health and Safety responsibilities, you must be conducting scheduled PAT testing to protect your employees from any potential dangers.

PAT legislation requires that everyone – landlords, employers and even self-employed people make sure that their portable electrical appliances are safe and are appropriate and used for the purposes meant.

Any appliance that uses a versatile cable or plug and socket qualifies as a portable appliance – we suggest, if you have many devices requiring checked and approved – to schedule a PAT alongside predictable system downtime or maintenance.

Differences between Class 1 and Class 2 Appliances?

There are a few of different classifications of electrical appliance.

Class 1 and Class 2 appliances are all powered by mains voltages. Both classes are required to provide at least two levels of protection to the end user, this makes electrical equipment safer to use.

Both Class 1 and Class 2 equipment require PAT, although it is important to differentiate the two as they are tested differently.

PAT – Class Type 1

Examples of Class 1 Appliances:

  • Kettles
  • Toasters
  • Irons
  • Microwaves

PAT – Class Type 2
